Hiking in Durango, Colorado

In June, we explored the diverse trails in Durango, Colorado. While higher elevation hikes like the Ice Lake Trails were still snow-packed, hiking around Durango, Colorado offered endless options.

From local must-dos like Spud Lake to tackling the Colorado Trail Segment 28 (Gudy's Rest), each hike promises unforgettable outdoor fun.

PLAN YOUR HIKE

Before setting out on a hike in Durango, it's important to plan your route and prepare for the day and the conditions you may encounter. Including:

  • Check the weather forecast and trail conditions, and bring appropriate gear such as sturdy footwear, layers of clothing, sunscreen, and plenty of water and snacks.

By preparing for hiking in Colorado, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable hiking experience while taking in the stunning scenery of Durango's mountains and valleys.

Purgatory Trail in Durango, Colorado

Length: 8.4 miles | Elevation Gain: 1,578 ft

The Purgatory Trail is a mix of scenic flats and challenging canyons, set against the backdrop of the San Juan Mountains, ideal for hiking around Durango, Colorado. It's moderately challenging with rocky terrain.

NOTE! Bring trekking poles and bug repellent, especially for those pesky mosquitoes.

The hike to the Cascade Creek-Animas River junction rewards hikers with spectacular views and the soothing sounds of Cascade Creek, accompanied by occasional bursts of colorful wildflowers.

TRAIL PROS:

  • well-maintained

  • interesting terrain

  • occasional wildlife sightings

  • plenty of great fishing spots along Cascade Creek and the Animas River are available—don't forget to bring a rod and fishing permit!

The first section, from the trailhead down to Cascade Creek, can be busy, with lots of dogs enjoying the trails. As you continue, the traffic thins, and the trail becomes quieter.

Near the Animas River bridge, there are picnic tables—a perfect spot to rest and soak in the surroundings after some pretty intense climbs.

Spud Lake

Potato Lake via Spud Lake Trail

PERSONAL NOTE! While hiking Segment 28 of the Colorado Trail, we met 81-year-old twins who hike this CT segment every day from April to November. They were truly inspiring, full of local lore, tips for mature hikers, and hidden gems known only to locals.

Their top recommendation for a quick and delightful hike? Spud Lake.

Length: 3 miles | Elevation Gain: 429 ft

A serene and relatively easy hike, Potato Lake to Spud Lake offers a perfect blend of tranquility and adventure. The trail winds through lush forests and around a lake, making it ideal for families and casual hikers.

The drive on Lime Creek Road, however, is not for the faint of heart! AWD or 4WD is a must as the road is rough and challenging.

Along the three-mile stretch, there were moments when we questioned our decision, but the Subaru Forester handled the rocky terrain admirably. We were passed by several local trucks, highlighting the road's rugged nature.

Despite the adventurous drive, if you have the right vehicle, this hike is well worth the effort!

TRAIL PROS:

  • mostly rocky and shaded

  • great for hiking no matter the time of day

  • mountain views as we hiked around the lake

  • fun places to camp along the shore *perfect first camping trip spots for families

NOTE! There are bugs and flies so grab some spray before heading out. Our twin hikers told us that thunderstorms hit this area daily so brush up on your lightning knowledge if you go after noon.

HOW TO GET THERE

From downtown Durango, take U-550N for around 30 miles. Turn right onto Lime Creek Road and begin your almost 3 mile jolting drive until you reach a small trailhead that holds around 10 cars.

So optimistic about hiking Durango, Colorado most famous trail head.

Colorado Trail to Gudy’s Rest

Length: 9.1 miles | Elevation Gain: 1,309 feet

We decided to head to Gudy’s Rest after a morning hike, though tackling this section of the Colorado Trail in the midday heat turned out to be less than ideal—we failed at following our own beginner hiking tips.

The Colorado Trail, a must-do on my backpacking bucket list, spans 567 miles from Denver to Durango. This final segment, starting from the Durango Trailhead near Junction Creek Campground, begins pleasantly enough but doesn’t quite match the epic scenery I had hoped for as a CT enthusiast.

Yet, we heard promising reports just ahead—the views supposedly knock your socks off! Along the way, we encountered bikers, hikers of all ages, and families cooling off in the river—I couldn’t resist dipping my tired feet in too.

We didn’t make it to the trail's turnaround point this time; the sun was intense, we had already covered many miles, and our planning fell short.

TRAIL PROS:

  • beautiful creek running alongside most of the trail

  • relatively easy uphill trail

  • well marked

After chatting with fellow hikers descending from Gudy’s Rest, it’s definitely high on our list for next summer's must-do hikes.

How to Get There

From Durango, get to CO Rd 204/Junction Creek road. Drive around 2.5 miles, turning left into the trailhead parking.

*It’s not a big lot considering how much traffic comes to this Trailhead.

Castle Rock via Elbert Creek Trail

Length: 5.3 miles | Elevation Gain: 1,666 feet

Sweet meadow views before the final steep summit climb begins.

The Castle Rock via Elbert Creek Trail is a scenic route that winds through Durango’s picturesque landscapes.

This moderate hike takes you through forests and across streams, culminating in breathtaking views from Castle Rock.

TRAIL PROS:

  • gradual ascent through dense forests *shaded hike

  • old cabin ruins along the way

  • stunning views of mountain range from summit

  • easy hiking along cliff rim

  • well marked and maintained trail

The hike to Castle Rock via Elbert Creek offers a delightful mix of challenges and rewards.

Castle Rock Summit views. I didn’t dare go any closer to the edge.

As you climb, the terrain becomes more rugged, requiring careful footing and navigation across rocky sections. The final stretch to Castle Rock rewards you with panoramic vistas of Durango’s surrounding mountains and valleys, making every step worthwhile.

The ascent is steady but manageable, with the most challenging sections near the summit.

Once at Castle Rock, take your time to soak in the views and appreciate the natural beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

You’ll be walking a VERY STEEP ridge that plummets over 100 feet straight down.

NOTE! If taking kids on this hike, be aware of the dangers getting to close to the edge creates.

How to get there

*Parking is very limited. There is a ski shop that says “no parking.” However, the shop is closed in summer months and everyone appeared to ignore the signs. There is also an amazing gas station next door with ice cold drinks, sandwiches and ice cream.

From downtown Durango, head toward Purgatory Resort and the Durango Hot Springs along US 550 N. Drive 25 miles (or so). You’ll make a U-turn at Yankee Girl Court, destination on the right.

Once you parked, go toward the large wood gates. There are enormous signs telling hikers where they should go. When in doubt, look for the following sign “Elbert Creek Trail.”

Blue Lakes in Ouray - Ice Lakes and Island Lake have similar coloring

Wish List Hike: Island Lake to Ice Lakes via Ice Lakes Trail

Length: 6.9 miles | Elevation Gain: 2,650 ft

It’s the ultimate hiker’s dream: hiking around Durango, Colorado on the Ice Lake Trail gives us all the feels! Stunning aspen meadows, exhilarating stream crossings, cascading waterfalls, pristine alpine lakes, and a kaleidoscope of wildflowers.

TRAIL PROS *shared by locals

  • challenging trek with considerable distance and elevation gain

  • effort pays off tenfold with jaw-dropping vistas that rival those of the famous Blue Lakes Trail near Ouray—one of Colorado's top hikes.

TIP! According to locals we talked to, there’s a sketchy stretch from Ice Lake to Island Lake, but with some caution and plenty of water breaks, it’s all part of the adventure.

This trail is a local favorite and touted as one of the best hikes in the area, especially during July and August when the snow has melted, revealing its full splendor.

June was too early to hike the area with reports of thigh-high snow. Locals assure us July and August is the best time to do the Lakes trails.

We'll have to live vicariously through others' magnificent photographs of this trail and lakes until we can hike there ourselves.
